Irish Oats!

by Marla Murphy January 14, 2015 1 Comment

One of my favorite healthy cravings is oatmeal especially during the colder months! I love oats because no matter where you are most places like Starbucks, breakfast cafes or even hotels all have simple oatmeals on their menus for a no brainer breakfast! When you are ordering just make sure they either cook the oats in water or almond milk and be sure you are the one adding in the toppings and extras to limit any undesirable ingredients like butter, brown sugar, heavy creams, etc. but if you are at home, the easiest/only way to guarantee that your oatmeal is on the healthy side is to make it yourself!! I love using Irish oats because they have the same nutrition content as old fashion oats but they take half the time to cook and who doesn’t love spending less time in the kitchen?! ‘Work Smarter Not Harder’! The best part of eating oats is the toppings; if you get creative with your toppings the combinations are endless!!! For an easy guide choose one or two items from each section below:  Healthy Fats:
  • 1 tablespoon of chia seeds
  • 1 tablespoon of flaxseed (ground)
  • 1 tablespoon of peanut butter or almond butter (stir this in right after you remove the oatmeal from the stove so the almond butter will melt and the flavor will be evenly distributed throughout the dish)
  • ¼ cup of walnuts, pecans or almonds
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Cashews
Fruit/Dried Fruits:
  • ½ cup of mixed berries
  • 1 tablespoon of Goji berries
  • ½ cup of sliced fruit
  • 1 small (6inch or less) banana
  • 1 small kiwi
  • Pomegranate seeds
  • Chopped dates
Flavor boosters:
  • Coconut flakes
  • Cocao nibs
  • Ground cinnamon
  • Vanilla
  • Drizzle of maple syrup

What is your favorite toppings for oatmeal?  Love,  Marla
